Original song
Hello Sunny Day
Tired, I sat on the tree stump and a stray sunbeam stroked my face.
Hello Sunny Day — Watch & Listen
Hello Sunny Day — Lyrics
Verse 1
Smiling as I wake, I do just as I please
Breakfast on the counter, coffee on the breeze
Light a smoke, check the weather, will the clouds drift away?
Then I smile and whisper softly, “Hello, Sunny Day.”
Chorus
Hello, Sunny Day, you’re shining through the leaves
Your golden voice is singing, carried in the morning breeze
Your warmth upon my shoulders, the night has gone away
Hello, Sunny Day, oh hello, Sunny Day
Verse 2
Sitting on a tree stump, in a garden gone wild
Wrapped in shades of green, I can’t help but smile
Rough bark beneath my fingers, whispers in the air
Every breath is brighter knowing you are there
Chorus
Hello, Sunny Day, you’re shining through the leaves
Your golden voice is singing, carried in the morning breeze
Your warmth upon my shoulders, the night has gone away
Hello, Sunny Day, oh hello, Sunny Day
Bridge
You’ve seen me through the seasons, the highs and lows I’ve known
And when you’re not around, I sing this song
It’s as if you’re around me, shining just the same
And every time you find me, I feel alive again
Final Chorus
Hello, Sunny Day, you’re shining through the leaves.
Your golden voice is singing, carried in the morning breeze.
Your warmth upon my shoulders, the night has gone away.
Hello, Sunny Day, oh hello, Sunny Day.
The Story Behind the Song
I’d taken to cutting the weeds in the yard earlier in 2025. Twice I came across this seashell, bleached white. Twice I put it on top of the tree stump in the middle of the yard after cuttitng the weeds.
September rolled in and I decided to cut the weeds again. Remembering the seashell, decided I should install it on my desk instead of leaving it exposed to the elements. So, after hacking the weed back into submission, I started looking for that errant seashell.
It looks like it wanted to play hide-and-seek.
Tired out from a short bout of seeking, I sat on the tree stump and a stray sunbeam stroked my face. Lines with a tune slowly crept into this little old brain of mine. While mentally composing the lines into coherent verse, I saw the seashell hiding among the treestump’s roots.
Rather belatedly, too, I remembered an old song with the line “Sunny skies sleeps in the morning”.
So I went ahead and wrote down the words, then a nice melody that “felt” right.
Very “James Taylor”-ish, too, naturally. haha
