Auric Territory

Auric Territory grew from loose, freeform verses I wrote in 2006, titled “Champagne Talk.” The original was published on my DaddyTechie blog on September 26, 2006.

Copied over the post (and retained the original post’s publish date for posterity!): Read “Champagne Talk,” the freeform verses on which Auric Territory is based.

La Petite Histoire

Some songs take twenty years to find their music. This one started with a few bottles of wine, a lady friend, and a little unfinished business.

The inspiration? Well, a lady friend and I had spent an evening talking, laughing, and consuming what I vaguely recall was more than four bottles of Carlo Rossi wine.

Somewhere along the way, we ended up sharing a single bed.

(pregnant silence)

Now, before anyone gets carried away, nothing happened. Absolutely nothing. We were both far too drunk to do anything but sleep. 🤣

But waking up with someone in my arms felt unexpectedly wonderful, especially after a few years without that kind of intimacy.

A few days later, still reminiscing, I began imagining what could have happened.

Or, more accurately, what should have happened. 🤣

And so Champagne Talk was born – a playful exploration of attraction, spontaneity, and that peculiar electricity between two people within range of each other’s auric territory.

Of course, back then, I was a little wary of posting anything that might be considered politically incorrect. So I wrapped my less-than-innocent thoughts in words like procreation, predilection, and procrastination…perfectly respectable vocabulary that somehow still managed to point straight at sensuality and sexuality.

I wasn’t exactly avoiding the subject. I was just taking the scenic route to it, indulging my tendency toward linguistic excess while maintaining a mischievous semblance of propriety.

Hahaha.

Twenty years later, those verses resurfaced and evolved into Auric Territory, a song that takes the original poem’s playful invitation and develops it into a friends-to-lovers narrative.

The bubbles are still there. So is the electricity. Only this time, imagination gets to explore the possibilities that reality left hanging in the air.

Funny how a night when nothing happened could inspire something that stayed with me for twenty years.

And for the record, I wouldn’t trade the memory of that morning for anything.

Although I still occasionally wonder about the alternative ending.

Hahaha.

Auric Territory — Listen & Lyrics

Verse 1

Why don’t we go through the motions,
Feel the rhythm, ride the notions.
Of creation without the chains,
No temptation we can’t contain.
We’ll skip the rules, skip hesitation,
And dance away procrastination.

Chorus 1 – Playful Tension

Let the bubbles do their work,
Let the night embrace our quirks.
In the sparks we set free,
You and me in electricity.
Within range, we can’t deny,
Your auric fire meets my sky.

Verse 2

We’ve shared the nights, we’ve shared the days,
Laughed at life in our own ways.
Now I’d like to let it slide,
Closer still, right by your side.
We’ll let the moment be our guide,
No need to hide what’s deep inside.

Chorus 2

Let the bubbles do their work,
Like the laughs we’ve learned to smirk.
In the sparks we set free,
We’re rewriting our own history.
Within range, no reason why,
Your auric fire lights my sky.

Verse 3

Let’s enjoy the taste we get,
From the hunger we’ve both met.
Releasing that pulse, that heat,
Where our restless energies meet.
Every breath a melody,
Every touch a prophecy.

Chorus 3

Let the bubbles do their work,
Every smile now feels like a perk.
In the sparks we set free,
You’re the only truth I see.
Within range, no more goodbyes,
Your auric fire is my sky.

Verse 4

Exuberance flows like wine,
When your skin is close to mine.
The air between us comes alive,
Every glance keeps the flame alive.
No map, no plan, no territory claimed,
Just your name and mine, unchained.

Final Chorus

Let the bubbles do their work,
Every moment’s now a work of art.
In the sparks we set free,
You found the missing piece of me.
Within range, we’ve touched the high,
Your auric fire… my endless sky.

Ad-lib

Mmm… your aura calling mine,
Yeah, we’ve crossed that line.
Every inch, every sigh,
Auric territory…
Where we both can fly.

[Repeat all four verses and choruses, followed by the ad-lib.]

[final invitation]

…Let’s fly.

Two champagne flutes filled with golden sparkling wine against a dark background.

About This Version

The recording featured here is the extended remix of Auric Territory, running just under nine minutes.

The lyrics trace a journey from playful attraction toward intimacy. Each chorus returns to “Let the bubbles do their work,” but the words around that invitation change as the relationship develops, from “Your auric fire meets my sky” to “Your auric fire… my endless sky.”

The full lyrical sequence returns for a second round, repeating all four verses, their choruses, and the ad-lib before a final invitation:

…Let’s fly.

Apparently, even my songs have a tendency to take the scenic route. 🤣
