I think its kind of ironic that a lot of people think that only rich people eat lots of meat. Many people being naturally garboso (prideful or snobbish), and in an (somewhat deliberate and ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ way) attempt to give the impression that they’re ‘wealthy’, tend toward mainly animal protein diets. Of course I could be wrong in this, but heck, I’ve heard variations of this manner of thinking over the years, and not just from friends, but also from co-workers, employees, neighbors and even children! (My bunso Enlil used to think so… geez )
This is kind of ironic on analysis, because by doing so, these people end up spending too much money on food that their bodies don’t need, and as a result, end up that much poorer not just in the pocket but also in health. Eh, the pocket? What happens when you’re not healthy? You spend more on conventional medicines which mostly address symptoms (only!) anyway and don’t really cure you (again I may be wrong in some way.) A more systemic approach to health really needs to be popularized with the general madla (public). An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure, so to speak. But that’s the stuff for maybe another post. hehe…
Health is wealth. A three-word sentence, oft-quoted, rarely thought on deeply, but with a world of meaning.
Don’t think I’m saying anything worth the time you’re taking to read this? Look at what the World Health Orgnaization has to say about what to eat to stay healthy:
A recently published WHO/FAO report recommends the intake of a minimum of 400g of fruit and vegetables per day (excluding potatoes and other starchy tubers) for the prevention of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity, as well as for the prevention and alleviation of several micronutrient deficiencies, especially in less developed countries.

So, next time you’re in the market or grocery and are thinking of buying that kilo of meat, consider that ‘tired and old’ three-word saying.
Buy vegetables, buy fruit instead of all that meat. You’ll end up healthier, and wealthier from the savings on food costs. You might even end up wiser if you actually try and check out the WHO’s website and read all the good articles they have there.
